Post your Ypulse Youth Marketing success stories here



The 2009 Ypulse Youth Marketing Mashup, being held today and tomorrow in San Francisco, is where top brand, corporate and social marketers, media professionals, educators and non-profit organizations gather to share best practices, research and latest strategies on marketing to youth with technology. Attendees find out what leading-edge technologies youth are using today and will be using tomorrow. Attendess also get an insider’s view into youth-focused tech and media startups and learn how to leverage social media, gaming, virtual worlds, mobile and more to authentically reach youth.

I am the keynote speaker today at 5:10 pm PDT.  I will ask audience members to come to GrownUpDigital.com and post their success stories about marketing to the Net Generation.   If you have a story to share, please submit your story as a response to this post.  The first twenty responders will receive a signed copy of Grown Up Digital.  Once you’ve submitted your story, email your full contact information to gillies@gmail.com so that we know where to send the book.

    I feel like there is a scarcity of good marketing today. Good marketing means which can convert the leads into sales. The only marketing that has moved me in the last couple of years is Search Engine Optimization.

    Hi Don,
    So great to see you again at the YPulse conference! Your presentation was terrific. I guess I don't have a "success story" to share so much as some historical perspective... 12+ years ago when you interviewed me and talked to members of FreeZone.com as part of your research for Growing Up Digital, we knew we were part of something very new and different. FreeZone's successes did not come about because of any grand marketing plan or strategic partnerships or licensing tie-ins; quite the contrary: it was all about the kids and tweens --members of the Net generation -- who were running the show. Through our homegrown tools (moderated chats, homepage builders, article generators, bulletin board discussions), these kids were engaging in online social networking even before social networking was defined as a category. Today of course we have Facebook and Myspace and MyYearbook and Stardoll and NeoPets and hundreds of other ways that kids and teens connect online, explore their identities, play games, create content and basically shape the future. As you highlighted in your keynote, this is not the "dumbing down" of a generation, it's the birth of a new era where the digital natives are driving and shaping the way we all will be communicating and consuming media for generations to come.

    Win the Ultimate Prom "WUP" is an online contest where every high school in the country has the chance win 25K in cash to put toward their prom or any other school event. Grand Canyon University’s “WUP” contest has given away over 100K in just over two years and originated when GCU wanted an innovative and creative way to connect with teens. We provide value by providing the funds directly to the winning schools and by providing teens relevant information about the benefits of continuing their education after high school. To win, we tell students to reach out to their classmates, faculty, parents and friends to get them to vote for their school encouraging community activism and organization skills. We provide teens with the tools they can download and customize to help them spread the word such as templates & ads to use on their Facebook/MySpace pages, screen savers, button and t-shirt templates.

    The 4th iteration of the Win the Ultimate Prom contest will take place in October - November 2009. WinTheUltimateProm.com has transitioned from a contest website into a prom resource site keeping prom relevant all year longs, including dress exchanges, tips and advice, mini contests, and more. We are actively seeking partners who can help us spread the word and enhance the contest or website, which is our primary reason for attending the YPulse Mash Up.

    WUP Winners summary - Win the Ultimate Prom was started in the Phoenix market only and gained momentum when we started talking to the schools directly by visiting and calling schools directly. Soon, Win the Ultimate Prom became the talk of the town with over 100 high schools in the area participating. In the end, Desert Vista High School ended up winning the first rendition of WUP in November 2007. In the spring of 2008, WUP branched out to the San Diego and Dallas markets with tremendous success. Mira Mesa High School near San Diego won the $25K Grand Prize using the money on both their Prom and Grad Night. They were extremely happy to win since their usual fund raising efforts were interrupted due to the San Diego wild fires. In the fall of 2008, the 3rd iteration of GCU’s WUP was held on a national level. Mira Mesa in San Diego took the 1st place prize again, JP Taravella in Florida took the 2nd place prize of $5k, and North Garland High School won a hot teen band to play at their prom!

    We are a Youth Marketing agency in Colombia, for the past 10 months we've been collaborating with MINI Cooper activating the brand down there...for the last 50 year aniversary there were lots of conmemorations around the globe under MINIUNITED platform, we organized our own http://www.mini.com.co/united/ , and motivate colombians to register on the global site....result: Colombia was the 4th Country in registers globally!! It makes us proud...also the sales increase that day was 900% And the expirience for owners and prospects generated lots of refferals...check it out!!

    My name is Ian Gold. I enjoyed listening to you this evening at Ypulse. Last October I launched WhatAreKidsSaying.com, a virtual community that is capturing the innocent and profound nature of kids and teens, while also giving them a platform to express their inner-most thoughts and opinions free from any judgment or criticism. As a young child, I learned to utilize the vehicle of creative writing to develop my own ability to articulate and express my thoughts and opinions.
